Erős kifejezéssel élt a magyarországi menekültek kapcsán az általunk is lefordított kanadai National Post-cikkben megszólaltatott Richard Kurland bevándorlásügyi jogász. „Megfejni a szövetségi államot” – fogalmazott. Az MNO cikkünk publikálása után olyan háttérinformációkat szerzett meg, amelyekből megismerjük a „csapolás” számait, akár egyénekre lebontva is. És persze sok minden mást is.

Az általában a neonáciktól az életüket féltő, aztán sok esetben a csótánytól való félelmükben azért mégiscsak hazatérő menekültjeink száma 2008 tavaszán nőt meg, túlzás nélkül állíthatjuk, hogy exponenciálisan: ekkor szűnt meg ugyanis a kanadai vízumkényszer. A téma megihlette az Indexet is, a portál az egyébként a kormánytól független Bevándorlási és Menekültügyi Hivatal (IRB) adatai alapján a következő adatokat hozza: míg 2007-ben 34-en indultak el köreinkből a tengerentúlra, addig a következő évben már 285-en. Egy esztendő múlva ez a szám csaknem megtízszereződött (2423), és azóta is kétezer fölött van.

Jason Kenney bevándorlásügyi miniszternek köszönhetően ugyanis új szelek fújnak a juharleveles országban, és egy Toronto környéki csicskáztató bandáról is lerántotta a leplet az egyik hazai internetes portál.

Kanada 30 bevándorlót gyanúsít háborús bűnökkel

Harminc, Kanadában élő háborús bűnös fotóját és adatait tette közzé a kanadai kormány; az intézkedés az illegális bevándorlással szembeni keményebb lépések sorába illeszkedik – írta pénteken a The Wall Street Journal.

A háborús bűnökkel gyanúsított személyek afrikai és dél-ázsiai államokból, valamint Irakból és az egykori Jugoszlávia területéről települtek be az észak-amerikai országba.

OTTAWA — Canada faces escalating threats from cyber-based attacks by foreign spies, hackers and terrorists — and more must be done to strengthen our defence and response systems, experts warn.

 

Cybertámadás érte kínai komputerekről a kanadai kormány számítógépes rendszerét – jelentette a kanadai CBC csatorna. A pekingi kormány határozottan cáfolta a hírt.

Az idézett kanadai források szerint a példátlan számítógépes támadás még a múlt hónapban történt, Kínában lévő szerverekről indult, s a hackerek behatoltak két gazdasági kulcsminisztérium rendszerébe, a pénzügyminisztériumba és a kincstári hivatalba. Amint észlelték a támadást, azonnal leállították az internet-hozzáférést mindkét intézményben.

Vass Zoltán fogadta a magas rangú vendéget, aki Pordány László, Magyarország kijelölt új kanadai nagykövete és Raffaz Ernő főtanácsos, valamint Némethi Magda kíséretében érkezett a Vaughan úti rendezvényre.

Dancs Rózsa, a Kalejdoszkóp c. kulturális folyóirat főszerkesztője röviden üdvözölte a megjelenteket, majd felkérte az államtitkár asszonyt, hogy tarsa meg az előadását, aki, miután életét és szakmai pályafutását ismertette, a hazai állapotok bemutatására tért át. A közönség őszínte tisztelettel és szeretettel hallgatta ezt a halk szavú, de határozott, kellemes stílusú szónokot , aki az oktató-nevelő munka minden szintjén nem csak magas szakmai képzettsége alapján, hanem gyakorlatból is ismeri.

Get your music fix at Toronto International Film Festival

The free Sept. 12 Block Party on King Street West between John and Peter streets will feature sets from these Canadian artists: 100 Monkeys (11 a.m.); The Sadies (11:30 a.m.); Karkwa (12:30 p.m.); Radio Radio (1:30 p.m.); and Fefe Dobson (2:15 p.m.). A “special musical performance” by an artist “so big” that the identity will only be revealed the day before will take place at 3 p.m.

This year's Toronto International Film Festival runs from Sept. 9 to 19 and while movies will obviously be the focus, the event should also appeal to music fans who can make choices from both live and celluloid performances.

Canada’s five biggest banks earned $4.8B in Q3

TORONTO — Canada’s five biggest banks earned a combined $4.8 billion in third-quarter profit — nine per cent more than last year — as they cashed in on strong growth in mortgages, consumer and corporate loans and other retail operations.

While the results were higher than the $4.4 billion in profits booked in the same 2009 period, the banks took a major hit from weakness in their capital markets divisions as economic uncertainty affected returns on stock markets.

Canada – Toronto should never again host G20: McGuinty

Ontario’s Premier Dalton McGuinty says he’d prefer not to see another G20-type summit in Toronto ever again, saying the experience scarred the city.

“There’s got to be a better way … I think it was very intrusive on life on Toronto,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

“Burning police cars is not something anybody will forget for a very long time.”

TORONTO – New Park Under Busy Downtown Underpasses To Open In Spring 2011

Most people wouldn’t think of taking their children to play, walking their dog or spending leisure time in a derelict area below an underpass, but the planners behind an innovative new park hope to change that.

Underpass Park, a project that aims to transform an ugly and incidental space into something exceptional, is slated to open in the spring of 2011.

Könnygázlövedékeket lőtt ki a tüntetőkre a rendőrség vasárnap Torontóban, ahol az erőszak újabb hulláma szabadult el a fejlett és fejlődő országok (G20) csúcstalálkozója idején. Anti-G20 protesters set up camp at a Toronto park after at least 3,000 people noisily marched through the downtown streets, snarling traffic along the way.

Following the first sizable protest, a few hundred people set up a couple dozen tents at Allan Gardens, not far from the summit meeting centre, where they said they will camp for the weekend. Most of the tents were red, with messages scrawled on the side including “Housing is a right” and “End homelessness now.”

Toronto police will be allowed to use sound cannons with some restrictions to disperse G20 protesters, a judge has ruled.

Civil liberties advocates and activists had requested that a court impose an injunction to prevent police from using a device known as Long Range Acoustic Devices.

TORONTO — How can a city so empty be so on edge?

Canada’s biggest metropolis was a contradictory mix of sedate traffic, deserted boulevards and frayed nerves Thursday as Toronto sat poised on the knife-edge of this weekend’s G20 summit.
